The Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry expresses its deep dissatisfaction and indignation over the ongoing and unjustified delays in the rehabilitation of the Liopetri River. This is a project of critical importance for the local economy, which remains stagnant, causing serious problems for fishermen, restaurateurs, residents and the overall development of the Famagusta District.
Although work began in 2020 and according to the contract, its completion was scheduled for March 2023, today, two years after the deadline, the project is still unfinished.
This fact underlines, once again, the inability of the state to ensure the protection of its citizens and its economy as well as to enforce the implementation of its planning, preventing those who, either through their actions or through their inaction, create delays, hinder or oppose development, possibly exploiting legislative loopholes.
As the Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we call on the Government and the President
of the Republic to immediately undertake all necessary initiatives to remove any obstacle,
including the removal of the contractor, in order to comply with the declared
their commitments and complete the project according to their promises.
The completion of the project is a matter of vital importance not only for the Municipal District of Liopetri and the Municipality of Ayia Napa, but also for the entire Famagusta district, while contributing to the overall upgrade of Cyprus' tourism product.
