LIOPETRI: The shocking story of two brothers who mourned the whole village

They did not manage to enjoy their lives, they did not manage to make their own family, their own children. No one believed that Thursday night would turn into a nightmare.

Their sisters, Niki and Christina, describe to ant1iwo everything that happened before and after the funeral.

Mrs. Niki Kosma from Liopetri states:

"We were 8 brothers, 5 girls and 3 boys. Unfortunately, our brothers Nikolas and Pagratios passed away very early. Nicholas was 22 years old and Pagratios 20. They lived with our parents while the rest of us were married and had our own houses.

They were worthy lads, hardworking and kind-hearted. They were farmers by profession, although Pagrati often told me that he did not want to stay in the fields. He wanted to go abroad to work, specifically on ships. I always remember saying to him: "Where will you go, my Pagrati, and leave us, stay in your place, close to your family".

It was December 19, 1986.

They came home for lunch and returned to the field with our brother, Andreas.

There was no Southern Pipeline at the time (collecting and storing excess water that previously flowed into the sea and transporting it through an interregional pipeline to areas where there is a great need for water) and to irrigate the potatoes, they had to draw water from the well. . My brothers wanted to know how far there was water. First, Nicholas came down the well with the winch.

Several minutes passed and when they tried to pull him up they found that Nicholas was not in the position where he had been hooked.

One possible explanation is that my brother fainted and fell off the window before he could shout for him to be lifted up. They started shouting at him but nothing and then Pagratios asked to be tied up so that he could go down to find him.

After a few minutes, they tried to pull him up, but he insisted on staying longer until he found his brother. When he came out he was half dead. An ambulance was called but as soon as it arrived, our boy died.

Our Andreas also wanted to come down, but fortunately he didn't. Meanwhile we heard the ampoule but where to imagine…

No matter how hard they tried our Nikola, no one was able to find him until English specialists with oxygen came from the Dhekelia Base. It was found 2 days later. He had been swollen all over his body for many hours in the water. My brothers died due to lack of oxygen.

Our father was an Australian to our older sister. We couldn't fool him on the phone, he understood and returned to the island on the next flight.

We immersed ourselves in mourning, along with the whole village. We lost two wonderful young people, two real Levantines.

Together with our parents, we decided, with the property that belonged to them, to build a church for them.

The church of the Holy Trinity, which is next to my house, was built in their memory. My Nikola and Pagrati, your memory is eternal ".

Mrs. Christina Theoklitou from Liopetri states:

"I was 8 months pregnant when I lost my siblings. None of us could bear the pain. I remember then I had to be taken to my doctor because I couldn't calm down.
I kept praying and saying to God, "Please take them to a good place, have them by Your side." Day and night I looked at the sky and said the same wish every time.

It had been 3 days since their funeral when…

I was awake but lying on my bed and looking at the sky.

It was 4 in the morning and I was praying. At one point I saw a bright light in the sky and I was very upset. The light was coming from a big door, it was not a dream and it was not my imagination. I knelt and prayed again and again. Now I knew that my brothers were with Him. I told my family and that gave us great comfort. Many times I saw them standing in my house but when I approached them they disappeared.

Seven years later, our father left and went to meet them. Twenty years later, our mother. They never left our minds and hearts. Today they would have their own family, their own children. We would see them and be proud but unfortunately…

Eternal is your memory, my dear brothers and parents. "
