LIOPETRI: Seven years in prison for the 24-year-old who shot his pregnant ex

The Supreme Court increased the sentence imposed by the Permanent Criminal Court to seven years in prison for seven years, who in September 24 shot at the 2020-year-old pregnant woman, his ex-partner while she was in the yard of her house in Liopetri.

In a statement, the Legal Service states that “the Supreme Court accepted an appeal filed by the Attorney General of the Republic, George Savvidis, against a 2,5-year prison sentence imposed on a defendant, who intentionally caused grievous bodily harm to a woman with whom he was past love affair, shooting her twice with a shotgun. "

Agreeing with the position of the Advocate General that the first instance sentence of 2,5 years imprisonment imposed by the Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca-Famagusta was clearly insufficient and the consequent need for imposition of dissuasive sentences, the Supreme Court of the facts of the case, set aside the first instance decision and imposed a 7-year prison sentence on the accused.

As, inter alia, the Supreme Court notes in its decision the accused "[…] acted cowardly, vindictively and without hesitation […]. It was a crude and unprovoked use of force against his fellow man ", and consequently" […] the sentence imposed by the Criminal Court neutralized both the element of seriousness and the element of deterrence ". As also pointed out by the Supreme Court, the woman has the right to choose her sexual partners and the right to end her relationship with them, something that the accused did not respect.

The announcement notes that the Senior Attorney of the Republic, Ninos Kekkos, appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
