The President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, visited today, Monday, November 23, the "Apostolos Varnavas" Special School in Liopetri, responding to a personal invitation from his student and friend, Nektarios Vasiliou, on the occasion of his birthday.
The President was welcomed by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Liopetri, Mr. Markos Koumis, and the School Director, Ms. Kiki Kassini, along with the students and staff of the school who had prepared a warm and particularly moving welcome.
Upon his arrival, the President of the Republic was welcomed with Cypriot Tsiattista by Michalis Hatzimichael and the students, while he participated with great joy in the singing and dancing, together with the school children. The students, in an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm, offered him gifts that they had prepared themselves. The President, visibly moved, opened them one by one, warmly thanking the children for their gesture.
A special moment of the event was the statement of student Marios Raphael Savvas, who, addressing the President, spoke on behalf of all children, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities, participation in society and access to spaces for learning, creation and work. Marios' words moved all those present, as he told the President, "Don't let us stop our dreams. Help us to have a space to learn, create, work and feel that we are part of society."
During the visit, the President of the Republic held a meeting with the School's Management Team and the Parents' Association. In his statements immediately afterwards, he stated that the Government intends, in the immediate future, to proceed with the announcement of new measures to support special schools, with the aim of strengthening the structures and services provided to children.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, thanked the President of the Republic for his presence and the sensitivity he showed, underlining the importance of continuous support and upgrading of the special schools in the area.
