The works are moving at a snail's pace in the designed fishing shelter on the Liopetriou River. Work on the site, estimated at €11 million, began in September 2020 and was due to be completed in March 2023.
Deputy Mayor Markos Koumis requests the immediate intervention of the Minister of the Interior on the issue of delays in the regeneration of the Liopetriou River.
Mr. Koumis noted the long delay observed, as well as the slow pace at which the projects progress. He points out that the immediate intervention of the Minister of the Interior and the competent government departments is necessary for the completion of the project.
According to Deputy Mayor Liopetriou, the last extension given by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing to the contractor was January 14, 2025.
It is recalled that in March 2023 a new extension was given to the project contractor until May 2024. Then, a new extension was given on July 1, 2024 and then on January 14, 2025.
The Deputy Mayor calls on the state to move immediately with the aim of completing and delivering the project on the agreed date.
The long delays in the project continue to have an impact on the fishermen in the area and also on the owners of the two restaurants who are counting large losses of income.
It is noted that the regeneration of the Liopetriou River is one of the largest projects related to the fishing sector in Cyprus.
