Liopetri River: Signatures for the renovation of the fishing shelter have fallen

After more than two decades of efforts, the regeneration of the Liopetri river is taking shape!

The Project Contract was signed today at the Head Office of the Department of Urban Planning and Housing: "Formation of the Fishery Shelter and the River in Liopetri (Phase A)"

The Contract was signed by the Director of the Department of Urban Planning and Housing, Mr. Kyriakos Koundouros on behalf of the Employer Department of Urban Planning and Housing, as well as by Mr. Nikolas Lois on behalf of the Contractor Lois Builders Ltd, for the amount of € 8.117.000,00 , XNUMX plus VAT

The project is co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and National Resources (Republic of Cyprus).

The duration of the contract is 30 months from the start date of the project which includes the configuration of the Fishery Shelter and the River in the community of Liopetri and their organization in a National Park, with a strong environmental character.

The study of the Project has been selected in the framework of an Architectural Competition and was assigned to the Designers Ieridis and Michael Architects who won the First Prize.

The aim is a General Development Plan which is based on three important axes, the smooth operation of the Fishery Shelter, the protection and promotion of the natural environment of the river area by creating an organized space with basic infrastructure projects and the creation of an important attraction for visitor.

Among other things, the Project includes:
• Fishing Shelter Facilities
• Bridge connecting the east and west banks of the river
• Fisheries Training Center
• Multifunctional space
• Entrance stand
• Pedestrian - Bicycle path

The development will offer multiple benefits to both everyday users and visitors.

"This is an ambitious project," says the mayor of Liopetri, Kyriakos Trisokkas, who will greatly upgrade the area and the entire province.

According to Mr. Trisokkas, The aim of the project is to create a modern and organized fishing shelter that will provide facilities for fishermen and safety for users and boats. "We have been trying for about 25 years to achieve this project, which will drastically change the image of the area and will place Liopetri on the tourist map," he said specifically.

With the regeneration of the Liopetri River, the province of Famagusta will acquire a single coastal front of many kilometers, which will extend west to Agia Thekla, the marina of Ag. Napa and the other beaches of Ag. Napas ", added Mr. Trisokkas. The cost will exceed eight million and the work is estimated to take 26-30 months. The regeneration of the Liopetri River is considered one of the largest infrastructure projects related to the fisheries sector in Cyprus and is approved for co-financing by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014-2020.
