On-site visit and inspection of the project by the Minister of Interior, the Mayor of Ayia Napa and the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Liopetri.
The new road network on the Liopetri River was officially opened to traffic on Saturday, July 19, 2025, during the on-site visit of the Minister of Interior, Mr. Konstantinos Ioannou, who, accompanied by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou and the Deputy Mayor of the Liopetri Municipality, Mr. Markos Koumis, inspected the road in question.
In his statements, the Minister of the Interior, after emphasizing the importance of the project for local development, stated that the project, although it had begun in 2020 with an initial completion schedule of 2023, experienced major delays, which led to the termination of the contract, with the consent of the local authorities.
He explained that with decisive actions and within a few months the road network was completed and delivered. He also mentioned that the work on the platforms is at a good stage, with a slight delay, and is expected to start in October, while their completion is expected to be completed a few months later. Regarding the total cost of the project, Mr. Ioannou noted that this will arise after the evaluation and approval of the tenders for the platforms by the competent committee.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, thanked the Minister for his presence and for keeping his commitments, noting that the project is being delivered almost five years after its start. He stressed that the tender for the construction of the road was awarded last April and was completed within the relevant timetables.
He also mentioned that the remaining work is in progress and expressed his optimism that the entire project will be completed by 2026. Finally, he thanked the competent services for their support and assistance, both in completing the project and to the professional fishermen.
For his part, the Deputy Mayor of Liopetri, Mr. Markos Koumis, expressed his satisfaction with the resolution of a chronic problem that had plagued the region and especially fishing professionals. He thanked the Minister of Interior and the President of the Republic for the personal interest they showed and emphasized that the opening of the road is a decisive development for the service of fishermen.
He also mentioned that the construction of the quays, which are necessary for the anchoring of boats, is expected to begin soon, expressing the belief that this part of the project will also be successfully completed.
The completion of the new road is an important milestone for the upgrading of the Liopetri River area, facilitating the daily life of citizens and strengthening the local economy and tourism development.
