As part of the "Young Journalists for the Environment" environmental program, students of the Kokkinohoria High School made a report with photos entitled "Argonaut of the Mediterranean, a living fossil".

The Young Environmental Journalists program is an international network of young people aged 11-21, active in more than 45 countries and coordinated by the non-profit and non-governmental Foundation for Environmental Education, based in Copenhagen (Denmark).

In this program, students develop journalistic research skills by writing articles, creating videos and taking photos, wanting to present problems and propose sustainable solutions concerning the environment that affect their community or Cyprus in general.

Argonaut of the Mediterranean, a living fossil

The Mediterranean Argonaute (Argonauta argo), an extremely hard-to-find animal belonging to the cephalopod molluscs, is found exclusively in the Eastern Mediterranean and is in danger of disappearing, as happened with its marine relatives 300 million years ago, the ammonites, leaving behind only fossils.

It looks like a small octopus that in its breeding season constructs a very fragile spiral shell to protect its eggs, which is why it is only associated with females of the species. This shell, which is rarely found whole, is characterized by enviable buoyancy, which all shipbuilders have tried to imitate over the centuries.
