The Plenary of the Parliament voted unanimously to amend the Law on Provincial Self-Government Organizations, in order to enable the formation of the Temporary Coordination Council for the free province of Famagusta.

Based on the amendment, the duties of President of the Temporary Coordination Council for the free province of Famagusta are carried out by the mayor of the most populous municipality in the said province, i.e. the mayor of Paralimni, and the sessions are held in rotation in the municipalities of the province.

Speaking to the Plenary, the President of the Interior Committee, AKEL Member of Parliament Aristos Damianou, said that the state and the Parliament did what was humanly possible for the new context of local self-government, and for this the local rulers should display similar attitudes. He added that it does no one any honor to pass photo legislation over some squabbles over temporary chairs.

DISY MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis said that for six months the local lords were unable to come to a substantive agreement and the Parliament is now forced to legislate. He added that the basis of the Provincial Organization should be dialogue and finding solutions to any problems that exist.

The MP of DIKO Christos Senekkis said that there was a gap in the legislation that was passed, that's why the problem arose and, albeit with a delay, the local authorities came up with a proposal that they brought before the Parliament.

ELAM MP Linos Papagiannis said that not all provinces were treated the same in the local government reform law and that the free Famagusta was not in the bill for a Provincial Council. He called for no more bureaucratic situations to be created in order to achieve the goal of the reform.

The MP of DIPA - Cooperation Marinos Musiouttas said that the reason for the delay in this particular issue does not honor anyone and called for the convergences to prevail so that the reform can be implemented in May 2024.
