To Michalis Soulis

Many times we have witnessed catastrophic policies and perceptions around the issue of the environment. Environmental policy must be based on the principles of precaution, prevention and remediation of environmental disasters with the basic principle: "The polluter pays".

Let's take the things from the beginning. Our energy system in Cyprus is outdated, expensive and polluting. Building a clean and "green" economy of the future is the most important thing we must do to protect present and future generations.

As a young person and an active citizen, I consider it necessary to take environmental initiatives, such as the promotion of e-mobility and the use of other sustainable modes of transport that are more accessible and efficient.

Recycling is an issue that concerns us all. We need to achieve stricter controls and sanctions to focus on recycling by promoting the reinforcement of recycling programs and their accessibility by households and businesses. There must also be a gradual end to pollution with stricter penalties for those who pollute, but there must also be a universal ban on plastic bags and disposable plastics in general.

In Cyprus of 21th century we have to "build" the obvious that exists in other countries and which no government has dared to do.

The energy upgrade of buildings and the installation of photovoltaics for the production of electricity is considered necessary in order to break free from the destructive energy policies of the past. To immediately promote Renewable Energy Sources by creating the bases of change, the bases of a clean environment.

Protecting the environment and its sustainability is not something that concerns me or you. It is something that concerns us all. It is something that concerns our own life and our existence and is directly related to our quality of life.

Climate change and environmental destruction are now considered to be the most important problems facing modern culture. It is now imperative that all individual issues concerning the destruction of our natural wealth be regulated through effective legislation and executive acts. It is equally important to recognize the importance of tree planting in order not to be deserted.

At the same time, the fauna of our country is mainly threatened by reckless building development but also other illegal actions which affect and threaten its population while domestic animals under incorrect, functional and applicable management plans and laws do not enjoy the proper other animal welfare which we must provide to them.

These are not just words. They are not simple remarks on a page of paper. All these are my goals, these are our goals to make a new and European Cyprus. A Cyprus that will respect the natural environment and that its people will be able to coexist harmoniously with nature.

Michalis Soulis is a Member of Parliament for Famagusta with the Generation Change Party.
