The legalized assurance of the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta Mr. Vassilios for the acquisition of the second Doctoral degree on the subject: "The knowledge of God according to Saint John of Damascus" took place on Friday 23/10 at the Theological School of Athens.
As is well known, Metropolitan Vassilios is distinguished and recognized on a pan-Orthodox level for his Theological education. He was born in the village of Mandres, Famagusta. on March 1, 1948.
He joined the fraternity of the Monastery of Apostolos Barnabas (1960), where he remained until the Turkish invasion of 1974. He attended the Theological School "Apostolos Barnabas" (1967 - 1970) and then the First High School for Boys of Famagusta (1970 - 1974). He completed his theological studies at the Theological School of the University of Athens during the years 1974 - 1978. In 1978 he completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Friborg, Switzerland.
He attended a two-year course in Sociology at the Department of "Law and Economics and Social Sciences", as well as Theological courses at the Theological School of the same University. At the same time, he completed a study of his Doctoral Thesis on the subject: "Ontological distinction of substance and energy and knowledge of God according to Saint Maximus the Confessor", in French.
He was ordained a Deacon in 1970. During his studies at the Theological School of Athens he served as a Deacon of the Holy Temple of the Living Source Academy (1974 - 1975) and the Metropolitan Church of Athens (1976 - 1978). In 1981 he was ordained an Elder and Archimandrite in Cyprus. In 1981 he took over as Head of the Greek Parish of Geneva. From 1982 to 1991 he served as Protosyggellos of the Holy See of Switzerland.
In 1991 he took over the management of the Office of Ecclesiastical Relations of the Church of Cyprus and was appointed head of the Holy Church of Panagia Faneromeni Nicosia.
On February 7, 1996 he was elected by the Holy Synod as Bishop of Trimithou and he was ordained a Bishop on April 28, 1996.
On May 11, 2007, he was elected Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta by lot and people and was enthroned on May 12 in Paralimni.
He is a member of the Central Committee and the "Faith and Order" Committee of the World Council of Churches. Represents the Church of Cyprus in the Theological Dialogue of the Orthodox - Roman Catholic Church. He is also a member of the Academic Staff of the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus. He is the only Hierarch of Cyprus who obtains a second Doctorate. He carries out rich spiritual, cultural and charitable work in his province.
