A tragedy occurred on Tuesday (18/7) in the sea area of Xylofagos Bay (Kokkinos Gremos), in the Province of Famagusta, when a yacht overturned, resulting in the death of 60-year-old Niki Christofidis from Lythrodontas, according to Assistant Police Officer Deitreis.

The Larnaca KSED responded to the incident, which rescued the other four people inside the boat.

The rescued were taken to Larnaca General Hospital for treatment.

This is the announcement of KSED:

On July 18, 2018 at 14:09, the Larnaca KSED received an emergency emergency call concerning 5 people of Cypriot origin in danger in the sea area of Xylofagos Bay (Red Cliff) in the Province of Famagusta. Specifically, a small boat in which the 5 people were riding, capsized and sank near the shore, probably due to the rough seas.

KSED immediately implemented the National Plan "NEARCHOS" to deal with the incident, mobilizing a helicopter of MAEP, as well as 2 boats of the L & N Police Station of Ayia Napa and Larnaca, while a small patrol boat and a boat of the British were sent on stage. After intensive searches of the vessels and aircraft, 4 people were located and rescued, while a woman was unfortunately pulled out dead.

The rescuers were transported by ambulances waiting in the area in Nosok. Larnaca for care and preventive examinations.

On the occasion of this incident, the KSED calls on the public to pay special attention, to observe safety rules and to avoid entering the sea in adverse weather conditions, while those aboard boats must bring life jackets and in case of danger to call directly on channel 16 or on the phone 1441 of KSED.
