Seven people were arrested today, Thursday, March 6, in Ormideia following a joint operation by the British Bases Police and the Republic of Cyprus, in an effort to combat modern slavery, immigration and illegal employment.
A statement from the British Bases states that those arrested are "a Greek Cypriot and his six illegal employees at a potato packing plant. The six arrested face charges relating to illegal residence and illegal work at the packing plant, while their Greek Cypriot employer faces charges of illegal employment."
It is added that the workers "will be handed over to the Aliens and Immigration Service of the Police of the Republic of Cyprus for deportation."
The joint operation "participated by four police officers and seven customs officers from the British Bases, supported by eight members of the Department of Customs and Immigration, the Labor and Social Insurance Office of the Republic."
The Senior Lieutenant of the Bases, Fanos Christodoulou, described, according to the announcement, as "extremely successful the operation carried out in collaboration with our colleagues from the Police of the Republic of Cyprus and the Customs and Immigration Department of the Bases" and underlined "the close cooperation and team effort that exists."
He also said that "we take this type of crime very seriously and will continue to carry out operations of this kind in the future."
