PARALIMNI: Unconsciously turned Lake Paralimni into a garbage dump

Recently, many unconscious people have turned parts of Lake Paralimni into a garbage dump, after throwing away any useless object they have in their house, from sofas, chairs, televisions, bathrooms, car tires and even pruning.

As the Mayor Sotiras Georgios Takkas stated in KYPE, “we know about the garbage that is thrown in the area of Lake Paralimni, which is adjacent to the Municipality, and instructions have already been given to employees of the Municipality to go to the spot and collect it. It is questionable because every year there are unconscious people who contaminate areas of Lake Paralimni as well as other places in various Municipalities and Communities, with garbage and bulky waste.

To a relevant question, Mr. Takkas answered that "in the free province of Famagusta there is no green spot, however bulky items such as sofas, chairs, refrigerators and other electrical items are transported for recycling."

Every year, he said, the Municipality of Sotiras sends notices to its citizens so that items that can be recycled can be transported to a specific place.

He also explained that "in some parts of the lake there is an altitude difference and nothing can be seen from the road, with the result that some unconscious people carry and throw their garbage illegally". However, he added, "until the creation of a green spot in the free province of Famagusta, every year a truck of the Municipality of Sotiras goes to Lake Paralimni and cleans the area from garbage that is placed illegally."

For his part, the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, said that "Deryneia has only shores on Lake Paralimni and in December a workshop was sent to the specific spot and cleaned some garbage that was there. "If some unconscious people go to the area at night and throw garbage, they do it because there is no green spot in the free province of Famagusta," he said.

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Karagiannis said that "these are unconscious people who throw massive waste which can not be collected either by the Municipal Garbage Service or go for recycling." Unfortunately, he noted, "the lack of a licensed green dot has the effects we often see in photos that are circulating."

He added that the Municipality of Deryneia "submitted an application for a licensed green spot and we expect a grant of 50 thousand euros from the Ministry of Agriculture, for the implementation of an environmental study. We have been designating a specific area for about a year now to become a green spot. At the beginning of November, I met with the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, who was willing to help. "

However, he noted, "at least in Deryneia, which is a remote municipality and some people use the dead zone to throw away their garbage, including bulky waste", adding that "it should have had a green spot for years".
