On the morning of Tuesday 21/05, the Minister of the Interior, Mr. Konstantinos Ioannou, had a meeting with the President and the Members of the Temporary Coordinating Council of the Provincial Self-Governing Organization of Famagusta.

In his statements, Mr. Ioannou stated that the processes of the Temporary Coordinating Councils (TCCs) of the Provincial Self-Government Organizations (EOAs) are at a fairly advanced stage in view of the implementation of the Local Self-Government reform from July 1st.

Mr. Ioannou referred to the Local Plan of Paralimni, which will be published before the end of May, as well as the Housing Plans for Mountains, Critical and Disadvantaged Areas and Rural Areas.

The Interior Minister said that the aim of these contacts is to identify any outstanding issues or problems so that they can be resolved. “At first glance, I see that they are on a very good track at least in terms of building facilities. I will also be informed about the rest of the issues, whether they concern personnel or relocation issues, etc."

The Minister repeated that "this is a very big reform, we are changing cultures and attitudes, three different organizations are coming together, for example, in licensing they are being transferred from the District Offices of the Department of Urban Planning and Housing, the Offices of the Districts and the Municipalities". He added that time credit will be needed until the situation is resolved. “As with any major reform there will be and we expect there will be difficulties. We are here, with good will, to resolve these problems for the benefit of the citizens."

When asked if any problems that existed in personnel matters in Famagusta Province have been resolved and asked how the process has progressed, the Minister of the Interior said that the personnel issues have been resolved, the necessary personnel have been deployed based on the assessments that have been made. "It may need even more staff, we will see that in practice and sort it out. The big problem a year ago was the issue of buildings. I am happy to see that they may be even more advanced at the moment in terms of the building and I want to publicly congratulate them for their cooperation", he noted.

The publication of the Local Plan of Paralimni is at the end of the month

As regards the Local Plan of Paralimni, Mr. Minister stated that this has been pending for many years due to the objections that had been made and demanded its redesign.

Mr. Ioannou stated that "we had promised that by the middle of 2024 it would be published and indeed, next week it will be published. Yesterday I was presented with the Plan, I approved it and before the end of the month it will be published in the Official Gazette of the Republic". As the Minister mentioned, its implementation will proceed, there will be a margin of four months for objections, however it will be published and the people will know its details.

Developments within days for the Housing Projects of Mountainous, Critical and Disadvantaged Areas and Rural Areas

In relation to the Housing Plan for Mountainous, Critical and Disadvantaged Areas and Rural Areas, the Minister of the Interior noted that the slight delay in his announcement was due to the fact that several changes and upgrades were made. According to Mr. Ioannou, comments and suggestions made by Communities, Community Leaders and Mayors have been taken into account. "We made changes, such as, for example, the extension of the duration to two years, the eligible foreign students, the financing, the inclusion of new Communities. Several changes have been made, it is ready and has been sent to the Ministry of Finance for their own placements and next week it will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for ratification and announcement", concluded Mr. Ioannou.
