85 immigrants in 4 days in Protaras - Concerns in the Government

The problem with the immigration crisis that afflicts Cyprus is growing.

By Today's arrival of a total of 36 Syrian immigrants in Protaras, the number of arrivals of illegal immigrants in three different cases rose to 85, in just 4 days, at least in the province of Famagusta.

The following inflows of migrants from the sea area of ​​the province of Famagusta to our country took place last Friday:

  • Friday, August 31st: 24 Syrian refugees (16 adults, men and women and eight minors, aged from 2 months to 8 years)
  • Saturday, September 1: 25 Syrian refugees (8 men, 8 women and 9 minors, including two infants, while the rest are up to 16 years old)
  • Monday, September 3: 36 Syrian refugees (11 men, 11 women and 14 minor children, four of whom are infants)

Her strong concern, however, expressed last Saturday the Government which through the Minister of Interior warned that Cyprus has reached its limits regarding the number of immigrants it can absorb. Today Konstantinos Petridis convened an extraordinary Ministerial meeting to discuss the subject.

It is worth noting that in the last ten days, 153 illegal immigrants, including 25 minors, have entered and are staying in the Republic of Cyprus.

According to data, there are currently about 10.000 migrants in Cyprus with protection status, while another 4.000 applications are pending for examination, with most of the migrants coming from Syria.
