The Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia expressed its strong concern and dissatisfaction regarding the operation of seven migrant accommodation structures within its tourist zone, speaking of "unacceptable handling" by the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the International Organization for Migration.
The issue was the focus of a meeting held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, with the participation of the Police, the Social Welfare Office and the International Organization for Migration. As the Municipality claims, the presence of the structures causes a multitude of problems, the main one being an increase in crime.
According to Police data, during last year's 2024 tourist season, there were increased incidents of burglaries and thefts by people residing in the structures in question, a fact that - as emphasized - has a direct impact on the image and security of the area.
"The tourism and economic development of our country cannot be jeopardized due to poor planning and wrong decisions," the Municipality's announcement states, recalling that the region covers almost 50% of total tourist arrivals in Cyprus and is a vital lever for the country's GDP.
The Municipality calls for the immediate removal of the structures from the tourist zone and the substantial strengthening of policing, with the aim of restoring the sense of security for residents and visitors. At the same time, it expresses its will to continue the fight for solutions that will ensure sustainable tourism development and social cohesion.
"It is the duty of all of us to protect our land, maintain peace and prosperity, and ensure that our region remains a safe and attractive destination for visitors," the announcement concludes.
