The site where excavations are being carried out for the "Nissia" Shipwreck in Protaras was visited on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 by the Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. Giorgos Nikolettos.
Mr. Nikolettos had the opportunity to be informed by the Associate Professor of Marine Archeology of the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Cyprus, Dr. Stella Demestikha, about the investigations being carried out regarding the highly valuable Shipwreck located in the Protaras Islands area.
It is pointed out that the Shipwreck of the Protaras Islands area is one of the seven shipwrecks pan-European and the only one in Cyprus that have been selected by the European project Thetida which aims to preserve and protect Europe's coastal and underwater cultural heritage from the effects of climate change and the natural hazards among the partners of the project are the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Maritime and Maritime Institute (CMMI). The Beach Inspector Mr. Giorgos Oikonomou also attended the meeting on behalf of the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia.
The Shipwreck Islands
It is a shipwreck from the Ottoman period, in the Paralimni Islands, at a depth of 28 meters. It is the only known shipwreck of this period in Cyprus and one of the few in the Eastern Mediterranean that has been excavated.
This fact makes his research important as it can shed light on issues concerning shipbuilding and maritime activity in the Eastern Mediterranean during this time.
