The Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. George Nikolettos, recently met with the President and members of the Board of Directors of the Paralimni Youth, on the occasion of the Municipality's candidacy for the title of European Youth Capital for 2028.
The Mayor congratulated the members of the Youth for the great initiative as well as for the huge success of the approval of the proposal to claim the title of European Youth Capital for 2028, as the Municipality has been selected among the 5 European cities that will be candidates to win the title.
Also present at the meeting was the Deputy Mayor of Paralimni, Mr. Kleanthis Koutsoftas.
The proposal was prepared and submitted to the European Youth Forum by the Youth of Paralimni, resulting in the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia being selected as one of the candidate cities among Chișinău (Moldova), Leeuwarden (Netherlands), Pernik (Bulgaria) and Podgorica (Montenegro). It is noted that 7 other European cities failed to be selected in the next phase, namely Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Bursa (Turkey), Euregio (Germany and the Netherlands), Gratwein-Straßengel (Austria), Muğla (Turkey), Velenje (Slovenia) and Vilnius (Lithuania).
The Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. George Nikolettos, stated that this is a very important success for the Municipality, as it proves, as he said, “that young people can achieve great and important things”. He highlighted the great work being done by the Youth of Paralimni with the contribution and assistance of the Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia, which led to this great success becoming a reality. At the same time, he emphasized that this success will also contribute to further cooperation with the Youth Councils of the other districts, which have already begun to implement remarkable work.
It is noted that the five finalists will submit their detailed proposal by 17 June 2025 and their final proposal by 7 October 2025. The European Youth Capital for 2028 will be announced in November 2025.
