Wetlands Day on February 2 - Event at Lake Paralimni

On February 2, World Wetlands Day is celebrated. Wetlands are places with invaluable ecological value for humans. They provide important services, such as food and clean water. Liquids filter water from pollutants that end up in the environment from human activities, protect against floods, stabilize the coastline and protect it from corrosion, and offer "home" to hundreds of rare plant and animal species. At the same time, they are recreation and leisure areas.

In our country there are important wetlands, which need protection, as they are degraded, mainly due to anthropogenic factors. The protection of wetlands is becoming even more imperative with climate change and rising temperatures around our planet. They are a natural solution for adapting and mitigating the effects of climate change, as they act as excellent carbon "warehouses". They also reduce the devastating effects of floods and are a valuable source of water in times of drought.

The main wetlands in our country are Alykes Larnaca, Lake Paralimni and Lake Oroklini. However, there are other smaller or even artificial wetlands (eg dams), which are equally important, especially for birds and migratory species. The competent Departments of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, recognizing the indisputable value of wetlands for biodiversity and sustainability, implement measures to protect them and promote actions aimed at protecting water quality, recording and monitoring habitats. , reducing pollution and tackling illegal activities.
