The competent Minister, Giannis Karousos, informed today the members of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport about the projects implemented and planned by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works in the road network of all the provinces of Cyprus.

In particular, the Minister of Transport said that in Famagusta Province tenders are expected to be announced at the end of 2020 for Deryneia - Sotiras road, as well as Kappari Avenue, while he noted that by the end of the same year the tender announcement is expected for the road Larnaca - Dhekelia.

Regarding the perimeter of Nicosia, whose phase A is already under construction, he said that funding of another 20 million euros has been secured for phase B, which will be implemented in parallel with phase A.

Mr. Karousos also informed about the road works in Limassol, such as the fact that the Limassol - Saitta road and the bypass of Germasogeia are in progress, as well as informed about the Polis Chrysochous - Paphos road, which is pending in the Tender Review Authority. , while the trial of the case is expected, so that the project can start.

Work on the Limassol-Saita road is expected to begin in September, he said.

In addition, he referred to the changes being prepared by his Ministry in relation to the operation of museums, such as the policy for free admission, the operation of museums on weekends and their digitization, noting that he would return to inform members in more detail.

Nicosia Perimeter

In his statements, after the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Mr. Karousos said that its construction has already begun before the outbreak of the pandemic and the measures taken, noting that there is a timetable of about three years to be completed and delivered.

He explained that it is a project with a budget of 73 million euros for phase A, while noting that funding has been secured for phase B, which must be completed in the same period, which is the first phase, since the project is co-financed.

In addition, he said that the Nicosia Perimeter consists of 4 to 5 phases, which will take several years to complete. However, he added that the first two phases will be completed in the next three years.

Road Works in the Province of Larnaca

The Chairman of the Transport Committee, George Prokopiou, focused on the road network of Larnaca, saying that for the past 20 years they have been tormenting the city.

Specifically, he referred to Phase C of the Larnaca - Dhekelia road, ie from the Nautical Club to Pyla, explaining that the project budget is 15 million plus VAT.

As he said, “the expropriations continue from the land registry and will be finished by October, while the project will be announced by the end of the year.

He added that the completion time of the project is two years from its start.

He also stated that as Chairman of the Transport Committee he will send a letter within a week to the Director of the Land Registry, in order to put pressure on him to implement the schedule faithfully and to complete the expropriations at the promised time.

Regarding the D phase that concerns the Pylas junction up to the CTO, he stated that a new regulatory plan has been made, which envisages two lanes and was approved on May 19, 2020.

He added that the views of the Community Council of Pyla are expected within a week and then the construction study will begin.

Regarding the new road of Alexandros Panagoulis, ie the continuation from the church of Agios Savvas in Livadia to the highway Nicosia - Ayia Napa, he said that the project is urban and the cost is estimated at 10 million, to add that the new update has started master plan, which will be completed by December this year and then the construction study will begin.

DIKO MP Christos Orfanidis raised the issue of the construction of the Larnaca - Dhekelia road, saying that his concerns have been confirmed.

"I said there was no way it could start. "Wishes were heard in the Commission today, but I still say today that the Larnaca-Dhekelia road is impossible to start within the time limits that have been set", he said.

He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was not the answer to "Larnaca".
