A triathlon section of Keravnos Strovolos organized a swimming and running race, unique in beauty and originality, last Sunday in the area of Cape Greco.
According to the Press Release of the organizers, the SwimRun race (swimming, running) was organized for the second consecutive year by the triathlon department of the GSS. "O KERAVNOS" and in it participated more than 50 athletes (25 teams) both of Keravnos and other triathlon clubs of Cyprus.
This year's SwimRun 2018 included a 20 km route (of which 18 were off-road running and 2 were offshore swimming). The race was divided into six sections of distance running up to 6 km with five intermediate swimming sections of about 400 meters each.
The enchanting route of Cape Greco combined with the crystal clear waters of Green Bay, the beach of Konnos and the Blue Lagoon, offered a unique experience to the 25 teams.
It is worth noting that the race was a complete success both in terms of the safety of the participants and in terms of the whole organization. The athletes were escorted to the sea by safety boats while there were four gas stations in the middle of the route.
According to the SwimRun rules, the teams consist of two athletes who must swim and run less than 10 meters apart. In swimming, athletes are allowed to use a barrel on their feet and paddles on their hands while wearing running shoes throughout the race.
SwimRun races are very popular in the countries of Northern Europe and especially Sweden where they started and are known as Otillo (OtillO means from island to island). The first match in 2002 was essentially a bet between four friends, who split into two groups and set as the only rule to go through three different restaurants between the small islands of the Sandham area. The bet was that the losing team would pay the Uto Island Hotel bill as well as the food and drink at the restaurant.
A few years later, in 2006, the race was re-organized by the 4 friends in the same area, while until 2013 the race was always held in Sweden and the participation did not exceed 16 athletes. In 2011 the number increased to 196, in 2012 to 900 and in 2013 it launched to 1948! Since 2014, SwimRun competitions have been organized in other European countries, including Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Russia, Germany, England and Scotland, while in November this year it will be organized in Greece as well.
In conclusion, the organizers thanked for their contribution to the conduct of the race, the Municipality of Paralimni, the Forest Department, the Famagusta Police Department, the Famagusta Port and Naval Police, Aquaprocy by George Demetriades, George Pengas A Physio, all the volunteers.
