Cape Greco: 5 people in custody for the arrival of illegal immigrants

The Famagusta District Court on Monday issued an eight-day detention order against five people aged 28, 19, 38 and 22, to facilitate police investigations into a conspiracy to commit a felony, aiding and abetting a third person in the country. Democracy, assistance to a person from a third country with the intention and for the purpose of making a profit and transporting a person by water by unsafe or overloaded boat.

As Steve Theodoulou, spokesman for the Famagusta Police Department, told KYPE, around 3.30 pm on Sunday, members of the Port and Maritime Police located and intercepted a wooden boat located 14 nautical miles southeast of Cape Achos.

The boat was carrying 26 people, 19 men, 3 women and 4 minor children.

He added that around 5.30 yesterday afternoon, members of the Port and Maritime Police located and stopped a second wooden boat with 36 people on board, 26 men, 3 women and 7 minor children.

"The passengers on the boats were safely taken to the marina of Ayia Napa and after the necessary checks, they were transferred to the Pournara accommodation area," he said.

He also noted that five people "allegedly the pilots of the two boats were arrested and detained under court orders".

They are two 28-year-olds, a 19-year-old, a 38-year-old and a 22-year-old who were brought before the Famagusta District Court in the morning, which issued a detention order against them for eight days.

The case is being investigated by the Famagusta Police Department.
