Young people from all over the world are raising their voices to save the planet, and the EESC has heard them. The EESC emblematic event for young people, Your Europe, your voice! (YEYS), will take place on 19 and 20 March 2020. Students from 33 secondary schools across Europe will meet to discuss the best ways to protect the environment, with the slogan "Our climate, our future!" ». The list of participating schools is available here.
The 33 schools that will participate in this initiative were selected through an online selection tool, with a draw that took place on November 27 in Brussels. One school was selected from each of the EU Member States and from the five candidate countries (Albania, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey). Each school will be represented by three students aged 16-18, who will be accompanied by a teacher. Nearly 800 schools have already applied for next year 's event.
The aim of the event is to listen to the brilliant ideas of the students for dealing with the current climate crisis and to help us get closer to achieving the goal of climate neutrality by 2050. Under the supervision and guidance of the young coordinators, the students will discuss their proposals using as a model a Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Students will meet with representatives of international youth organizations, who will help them transform their ideas and suggestions into specific recommendations. These recommendations will be presented by the EESC to international environmental policy makers and will be discussed at conferences across Europe throughout the year.
To prepare for the discussions, an EESC member will visit each participating school to present the EU and the EESC and their work for young people and to explain how the event is being conducted and what exactly expected from schools.
Historical frame
"Your Europe, your voice!" The event "Your Europe, your voice!" (YEYS) is organized by the European Economic and Social Committee, the voice of civil society in Europe. YEYS is the EESC 's flagship event for young people and was launched in 2010 to connect the youngest citizens of Europe with the European Union.
Each year, students aged 16-18 from all the Member States of the European Union and the candidate countries come to Brussels for two days and work together to draw up resolutions which are then forwarded to the institutions of the European Union. These resolutions contain their ideas, proposals and hopes for their future as European citizens.
All secondary schools in Europe can apply to send three students to the event. Through this initiative, the EESC seeks to take into account the views, experiences and ideas of the younger generations in Europe in the EU policy - making process.
