The Municipality of Paralimni-Dheryneia, within the framework of improving the lifesaving capacity of the Teams made available by the District Administration to cover the beaches of the Municipality, has decided to include the personnel of water sports companies who wish to assist in the rescue of people in danger in the area where they are based or nearby, under the coordination of the Lifeguards who perform duties at the nearest Lifeguard tower.
For this purpose, a memorandum of cooperation was signed today by the Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. George Nicolettos, and the owners of water sports based on the beaches, wishing to establish the framework for their cooperation in cases of emergency for the rescue of bathers who are in danger in the specific or nearby sea area. The memorandum of cooperation was signed voluntarily by the water sports companies, which are ready to assist in the rescue of bathers on the organized beaches of the Municipality without any compensation. The water sports staff will respond to assist in the rescue of a bather after being called by the lifeguard of the nearest lifeguard tower on the beach where the water sports company is based.
The memorandum of cooperation was prepared by retired Rear Admiral Mr. Costas Fitiris, a specialist in search and rescue issues who was also the author of the national plan "SALAMIS" which is implemented on the beaches of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia thanked the owners of water sports for their willingness to sign the memorandum of cooperation and, as he stated, "in accordance with the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue and ethics, all citizens should assist in saving human life if they have the knowledge and ability to do so."
