PARALIMNI: Photo in honor of the Greek Revolution from the Cultural Workshop "By the Lake" (IMAGE)

The Cultural Workshop "Para ti Limni", wanting to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, presents the photo "Konstantinos Kanaris in Cyprus".

The photo is inspired by the well-known painting "The arrival of Konstantinos Kanaris in Cyprus", by George Mavrogenis (Gallery of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation, Nicosia).

The whole effort was made with absolute respect for tradition and history, aiming to create an album on the Greek Revolution.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, our idea could not be completed. We hope that soon we will be able to continue and present the project completed.

An excerpt from the "Memoirs of the tragic scenes in 1821 on the island of Cyprus" (George I. Kipiadis, Alexandria 1888) for the visit, according to tradition, of Kanaris to Cyprus:

"The fearless navigator Kanaris, from the coasts of Egypt, around June 19, 1821, sailed after his fleet to the present Homeland, docked in the harbor near Agios Sergion, or at the port of Lapithos A. In both places the Cypriots did not hesitate to offer them money, and whole cargoes, three barges of islands, sheep and boa and wheat and barley and various other foods ".

According to Kipiadis, Kanaris docked on the island and specifically in the bay of Asprovrisi, on the shores of Lapithos (the shore where the hero is rumored to have arrived, was named "Akti Kanari"). There, he was well received and received rich financial assistance from the Cypriots, who assisted in the struggle of 1821 with whatever they could. (Newer researchers, such as Andros Pavlidis, place Kanaris' visit later, perhaps in 1825 or 1827, when Kanaris was returning from Egypt).

According to the tradition, when the burlotier of Psara arrived in Lapithos, he was hosted by the nobles of the island and remained hidden for a few days in the mansion of the distinguished Paspallas in Agia Paraskevi, Lapithos. Before he left, it is said that the abbot and the monks of the neighboring monastery of Achiropoietos, but mainly the Lapithiotes and the inhabitants of the nearby areas, generously assisted him with money and supplies, mainly Lapithian knives and food. It is also said that many young men from Lapithos followed him on his boat, barging for Greece, to offer their services to the Struggle.

A few days later, when the Turks were informed of the events, their ax fell heavily in Cyprus, beheading the prominent Hatzilias and other Lapithiotes, in the massacres of July 9, 1821, in Nicosia.
The detailed local tradition, which states that Kanaris was in Cyprus, can not be ignored and certainly does not negate the most important help and contribution of the Cypriot people in the epic of '21.
