The residents of the area of Paralimni, which is adjacent to the forest of Ayia Napa, are upset due to the transport of hundreds of dirt trucks, which, as they claim, destroys the area, while the dust that is emitted and the noise caused cannot even open doors. and windows.
Influenced residents met and examined the situation that has arisen and intend to set up a race committee, so that on the one hand the transfer of soil is completed and on the other hand the natural environment is restored. On behalf of the residents, the teacher Mr. Giannis Vassileiou stated that, based on the information they received, the company that transports the soil has not secured a permit.
As he explained, the mayors of Ayia Napa and Paralimni were informed, but to date no effective measures have been taken. Moreover, as he stated, the Police showed reluctance to handle the issue, referring to the Municipality of Paralimni, within the limits of which is the area where the soil volumes are discarded. In addition, according to him, the Department of the Environment and other stakeholders were informed, but no action was taken.
Mr. Vassiliou told "Phileleftheros" that the transfer of soil began on March 19 and has not stopped on March 25 or April 1, nor on weekends. He also claimed that if the authorities acted in a timely manner then such large quantities of soil would not be transported to the area. Mr. Vassiliou claims that the trucks carrying soil may have exceeded 500.
Mr. Vassiliou also said that, according to the information they received, the largest volume of soil comes from an excavation carried out in Ayia Napa, at a point where the construction of a large hotel is planned. Mr. Vassiliou claimed that the earthworks in Ayia Napa for the construction of the hotel started without a planning permit and expressed doubts whether a permit has been obtained from the Town Planning Center in the meantime. The residents watched the trucks and found, as we were told, that they were receiving soil from another area of Ayia Napa and did not rule out the possibility of transporting soil from elsewhere.
A letter from Mr. Vassilios to the mayor of Paralimni states that "the transfer of the soil has created an eruption on the hill and is already visible from various areas."
Mr Vassiliou also said that the nearest of the 20 or so houses in the area was just a few dozen meters from the landfill. As it appears from visual material, yesterday at some point three trucks were in the grounding area at the same time.
Mr. Vassiliou stated that the dust is not only caused by the emptying of the soil by the trucks, but also by a crusher which is located on the spot and breaks the stones that are mixed with the soil.
When residents asked truck drivers if they had a permit to transport the soil to the specific spot, they were told that, as far as they were informed, a permit was obtained from the landowner.
