A student conference on "Companions in the sacred pilgrimages of our place - From the past to the present, looking to the future" took place today in the old church of Agios Georgios in Paralimni.

The conference is part of the program of student religious tours organized by the Directorates of Secondary General and Secondary Technical-Vocational Education in collaboration with the Synodal Office of Pilgrimage Tours of the Church of Cyprus.

During the day, presentations were made with the students' studies.

• Churches and chapels of the Municipality of Deryneia from the High School of Peace and Freedom
• The church of Agios Georgios "of the square" in Avgorou and its hagiography from the High School of Kokkinohoria "Panos Ioannou"
• Holy Pilgrimages of the Communities of Xylofagos and Liopetri from the Regional High School of Xylofagou
• Touching the Religious richness of our community from the High School of Paralimni
• Carpenter's hermitages from the Rizokarpasos High School and the Technical School of Paralimni and
• Holy Basilica and Stavropegiki Monastery of Apostolos Varnava-Station in the History of the Church of Cyprus from the Lyceum of Paralimni.

During the day, traditional songs were presented by the Traditional Ensemble of the Music School of Famagusta under the direction of George Kalogirou.

The aim of the Program, as we all know, is to highlight our religious monuments, the cultural wealth associated with them (hagiography, mosaic, wood carving, etc.), but also the historical wealth that accompanies them.

Already this ornate temple in which we are now, according to tradition, succeeded in the 19th century an older Byzantine church. Valuable treasure that survives in its long history with the iconostasis, the written decoration of the Holy Table, but also the fresco of the Trophy-bearing Saint George as a dragon-killer dominating its northern aisle.
