The church of Agia Anna in Paralimni was illuminated in red last night for the World Thalassemia Day.
Something that happened in several buildings and in the other Provinces, in combination with blood donations, but also the online presentation of the book "Gift of Life" which you can watch by clicking HERE.
"Thalassemia, a genetic disease, can now accompany the life of a person with thalassemia throughout their life for many decades.
People with thalassemia are now active citizens, contributing to diversity and their struggle for life in humanity's quest for acceptance of diversity.
A difference that you do not choose but that you are lucky enough to be chosen.
Our country has one of the highest rates of disease carriers worldwide.
For this my message for this day is that we must learn to live with thalassemia, until the day when recovery will be a small and easy process.
And this is something that will not be late! ”
"The Pancyprian Antianemic Association also celebrates this year's World Thalassemia Day, in unprecedented conditions, in the context of a pandemic that tests the resilience of society and health systems but also poses special challenges in the quality treatment of people with thalassemia.
The 8η May has been established by the World Health Organization and the International Thalassemia Federation, based in our country, as World Thalassemia Day (Mediterranean Anemia). The goal of World Thalassemia Day is to raise awareness and encourage scientists around the world to better treat the disease, as well as to raise public awareness about the problems of people with thalassemia and the effort required for blood safety and adequacy.
This year, World Thalassemia Day, finds us for the second consecutive year in conditions of pandemic and restrictive measures. All this time, there is a normal insecurity among the family of people with Thalassemia regarding the spread of the virus among the community and the staff of Thalassemia Centers, their protection and the possible complications from the exposure to the virus and the adequacy of blood. .
In the above circumstances, we celebrate this year, Saturday, May 8, the World Thalassemia Day more than ever, as a day of hope for the prevalence of health and life. This difficult period, with the achievement of appropriate immunity through vaccinations, will pass and we must begin to see the next day.
On the occasion of this year's Thalassemia Day, the Pancyprian Anti-Anemia Association organizes a series of events which include the illumination of the Presidential Palace, the Ministry of Health and important buildings and monuments in all cities in order to raise public awareness about .
At the same time, it publishes a unique children's book on blood donation, by Maria Tsivika, in collaboration with the Blood Center, in order to further strengthen the culture of blood donation that characterizes the Cypriot society. The aim of PAS is the book "Gift of Life for 1 and 2 and 3 and 1013" to convey to all children the value of daily voluntary service and selflessness.

The Pancyprian Antianemic Association, on this significant day wants to thank especially those health professionals of the Thalassemia Centers who stood and stand faithful to their duty and oath, the staff of the Center and the Blood Banks and all the blood donors who with the offer give all people with thalassemia the right to continue living a normal life.
We are sure that after the storm we are facing, better days will come. We are used to the difficulties and problems and we are optimistic that this pandemic is not going to pay off and we will succeed. ”
