The Cypriot athletics delegation, which will represent us at the 31nd Commonwealth Games, has been in Birmingham since the dawn of Sunday, July 2022, 22. Despite the fact that we expected a bigger mission, which the KEEAS requested to the KOE, based on the 8th place of the previous event in the Gold Coast of Australia, however, only 12 places were given to the athletics. And so they left out children who could register success, but also compete at the highest level and improve their performance. After all, athletics is the sport with the most world-class sportsmen and women athletes of all the other sports in the Commonwealth, since major powers such as Jamaica, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa participate and of course "divided" Britain, with England and Scotland having quite strong teams.
Out of the 12 children approved to participate, Olivia Fotopoulou remains out of the team, who needs rest after the World Championships in Oregon, to be more ready for the European Championships in Munich that follows (August 15-21). Thus, the 11 male and female track and field athletes for this year's Commonwealth Games are the silver and bronze winner in Glasgow (2014) and Gold Coast (2018), gold Mediterranean Apostolos Parellis in discus, 4th in Australia and Mediterranean gold Milan Trajkovic at 110m. with hurdles, the silver Mediterranean Alexandros Poursanidis in the hammer throw and the Christoforos Genethlis (discus throw), Nikandros Stylianou (5th in Glasgow and New Delhi, on pole), Christos Tamanis (pole vault), Androniki Lada (discus throw), Philippa Fotopoulou (length), Natalia Christofi (100m hurdles), Despina Charalambous (height) and Chrystalla Kyriakou (hammer throw). The head of the mission is the member of the Board of Directors of KOEAS, George Georgiou.
Based on the participation lists, the distinction will be difficult again this year for our children, but many have learned the hard way and will chase with all their might the best placing and why not, a place on the podium. Note that the final participation lists will be validated at the athletics technical meeting on Monday (1/8) and it is possible that there will be changes. Changes may also be made to the program, since if there are fewer athletes in some events, a final may be held directly. The athletics events at the 22nd Birmingham Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held at the 'Alexander Stadium' from 2nd to 7th August. According to the participation declarations so far, the comparison of this year's performances, for our sportsmen and women in each event, is as follows:
