The importance of the Shipwreck of the Islands as one of the most important findings of underwater archaeology in Cyprus was underlined by the Mayor of Paralimni - Deryneia, Mr. George Nicolettos, during his speech at the shipwreck presentation event, which took place on June 17, 2026.

In his greeting, the Mayor congratulated the Cyprus Institute for the Sea and Maritime Affairs, the University of Cyprus and all the scientists and researchers working on the study, protection and promotion of underwater cultural heritage, as well as on the creation of the digital application within the framework of the European program "Thetis". He made special mention of the Associate Professor of Underwater Archaeology at the University of Cyprus, Dr. Stella Demesticha, for her significant scientific contribution to the research of the shipwreck.

Mr. Nicolettos emphasized that the Shipwreck of the Islands, which is located in the sea area of the Protaras Riviera, is a unique archaeological artifact from the 18th century and offers valuable information about navigation, trade and life in the eastern Mediterranean during that period.

At the same time, he referred to the Municipality's actions to highlight the marine and underwater wealth of the region, noting that the investigation into the creation of a presentation space for underwater archaeology in collaboration with competent bodies is underway, as well as the preparation for claiming funding with the aim of creating a modern Marine Culture Center.

Additionally, he announced that the Municipality will proceed in the coming days with the publication of a comprehensive diving guide, which will present the diving spots in the area and highlight their historical, cultural and environmental value.

Concluding, the Mayor pointed out that through the tourism development strategy of the Protaras Riviera, history, culture, nature and the underwater world are connected in a single experience that strengthens the identity of the place and upgrades the experience of residents and visitors.
