A 20-month prison sentence was imposed today by the Famagusta District Court on a young man who was arrested in July 2019 and for two years set up a grenade launcher on women on Protaras pedestrian street and cut tufts of their hair.
The suspect was located by the Municipal Police of Paralimni on July 14, while wandering suspiciously in the wider area of Protaras.
Police were informed, members of which rushed to the spot, where during a physical search of the 23-year-old, they found in his possession a pair of scissors 30 cm long, as a result of which he was arrested for the self-inflicted crime of illegal possession of an offensive instrument.
From further investigations, the 23-year-old was considered the person wanted by the Police in connection with investigated cases of attacks on ten women and cutting off part of their hair using scissors or a knife, offenses committed between June 2017 and July 2019. .
With his written consent, a search was carried out at his residence, during which bundles / braids of hair were found at various points, as well as a bicycle, similar to the one used by the perpetrator against the attacks on women on the promenade on Protaras.
The suspect then admitted to committing the crimes and claimed to members of the Police that he was cutting women's hair to send them to institutions in his home country, Egypt, where children with cancer and leukemia are being treated.
As he explained, he was going to Protaras pedestrian street on his bicycle and was hiding in secluded places. As soon as she realized that a tourist was moving alone, she attacked her and after cutting her hair, she returned home.
