As we have mentioned, the increase and presence of the jellyfish population is a temporary phenomenon, which usually lasts from a few hours to a few days and is mainly due to the direction of sea currents, as well as favorable climatic conditions, such as increased temperature and increased nutrients.
This species carries risks to humans, as contact of the tentacles with the skin causes irritation that varies from person to person. The public is called upon to be especially careful and to avoid swimming in areas where this phenomenon is observed.
Also, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (TATHE) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, in order to inform and ensure the protection of the public and specifically bathers, announced that jellyfish have been observed on the east coast of Cyprus of the species Pelagia noct.
What to do in case of skin contact:
1. Carefully rinse with sea water, but do not rub the affected area.
2. Use a plastic card (eg credit) to remove any debris from the tentacles.
3. Inform the lifeguards, if any, of the area to take the necessary action.
4. Acute pain usually lasts about 15-20 minutes. If the pain persists, consult a doctor.
5. In case of allergic shock, contact / go immediately to a doctor or hospital.
