A bill prepared by the Ministry of Interior and which may not have taken its final form provides for the maintenance of 15 municipalities in the free zones, from 30 today as reported in today's publication of the newspaper "Politis".
For major Nicosia, the reduction of municipalities from 9 to 4 is foreseen, with the merger of the municipalities of Strovolos and Aglantzia being considered a surprise. The municipality of Nicosia is planned to be merged with the municipalities of Engomi and Agios Dometios, while to the east Latsia, Geri and Dali are merged and to the west Lakatamia with Tseri.
There are three municipalities in Limassol, two in Larnaca and one in Paphos.
A tourist and a rural Municipality in the province of Famagusta
In free Famagusta, a tourist giant is created by merging the municipalities of Paralimni and Ayia Napa, while a rural municipality is created, by merging Deryneia, Sotira and communities. It is assumed that these choices will provoke many reactions.
According to the publication of the newspaper "Politis", there is the intention by the Ministry of Interior to create a large tourist municipality in the free area of Famagusta by merging the municipalities of Paralimni and Ayia Napa and the creation of a rural municipality in the same area, by merging the municipalities Deryneia and Sotiras with the communities of Liopetri and Frenaros. There were thoughts of uniting the other three communities in the area (Avgorou, Acheritou and Achna) but they were probably abandoned for the time being.
It is certain, it is mentioned in the publication of "Politis" that many of the unions provided through the bill will cause great reactions in affected local communities, but also from economically strong Municipalities, such as Ayia Napa.
