The celebrations for the anniversary of April 1, the beginning of the national liberation struggle of EOKA 1955-59, culminated today in free Famagusta.
In Sotira, the solemn doxology was performed at 10.30 in the morning at the Holy Temple of the Transfiguration and the solemnity of the day was delivered by the Commissioner of the Presidency, Fotis Fotiou. This was followed by a trishagio and the laying of wreaths at the Monument of the Fallen and Missing Savior.
At 11.00, the Famagusta District Parade took place along Archbishop Makarios GD Avenue, with the participation of organized groups from Municipalities and Communities of the Famagusta province, which were greeted by the Mayor Sotiras Georgios Takiou, Fr. Napas, MEP Lefteris Christoforou and MPs of the province.
At six in the morning, a parade was held and the flag was raised at the Municipal Palace of Paralimni by Mayor Theodoros Pyrillis.
At 09.30 in the morning, the solemn doxology was performed at the Metropolitan Church of Agios Georgios, officiated by the Metropolitan of Constantia - Famagusta Vassilios.
The Government was represented by the Deputy Minister of Shipping Natasa Pileidou and the solemnity of the day was announced by Panagiotis Antoniou, Chairman of the Education Service Committee. This was followed by a trishagio and the laying of wreaths at the EOKA Monument.
In Liopetri it was performed at 08.30 in the morning at the Church of Panagia Eleousa the national memorial of the first heroic martyr of the National Liberation Struggle of EOKA Modestos Pantelis.
The memorial service was presided over by Archimandrite Augustinos Kkaras, Protosyggellos of the Metropolis of Constantia - Famagusta and the commemorative speech was delivered by the Minister of Health Konstantinos Ioannou.
A procession followed to Liopetri Square where a trishagio was performed and wreaths were laid at the statue of the heroic martyr.
In Ayia Napa, the solemn doxology was performed at 08.30 in the Holy Temple of Panagia Ayia Napa and the solemnity of the day was announced by the President of the School Ephorate of Ayia Napa, Fotos Kikillos.
