He walked 11km to thank and cheer the staff of the Reference Hospital

An honorary hike of 11 km for the medical, paramedical and nursing staff of the Famagusta General Hospital, which operates as a Reference Hospital, was carried out today by the hiker Alexandros Sophocleous.

Alexander started at 9 in the morning from the Ayia Napa roundabout and in his statements characterized "the contribution of the medical, nursing and paramedical staff of the Reference Hospital as very important and that is why today's hiking is honorary." We honor the people who all this time gave their best to help their fellow human beings and we thank them ".

Around 11 in the morning, Mr. Sophocles met at the building of the Fire Service of Paralimni with the Volunteer Commissioner Giannis Giannakis and other people from Charitable Organizations and then proceeded to the General Hospital of Famagusta.

At the entrance of the Hospital, the hikers met with Dr. George Orthodoxos, who on behalf of the Hospital Management "warmly" thanked the presence of Alexandros Sophocles, the Volunteer Commissioner and the representatives of the Charitable Organizations. can only offer good, such as animation, to the medical, nursing and paramedical staff of the Hospital ".

In a related question, Mr. Sophocles said that "apart from our thanks and gratitude to the medical, nursing and paramedical staff of the Hospital, we owe them the utmost, the recognition of their work, their patience and endurance, after they showed humanity, effort, toil and continue to do so throughout this difficult year for all of us. "Today's hike is marked by the arrival of the vaccines and on Sunday the vaccinations are expected to start at the Reference Hospital and for the elderly".

He also noted that during his trip, restaurant owners in the area gave him coupons "for free food, to be given to the staff of the Hospital to receive their lunch or dinner from the specific restaurants. "Despite the fact that the conditions we are going through are difficult, especially for the restaurants, in this humble and small way, they made the effort and overcoming them to help those who work in the Reference Hospital".

Volunteer Commissioner Giannis Giannakis stated that "today's event of Mr. Sophocles was held to support all these people in the Reference Hospital who during the pandemic fight against the invisible enemy and save lives, which is very important. All these months the staff of the Hospital on a daily basis and for many hours, give and continue to give this great battle successfully ".

He added that "statistics show that in Cyprus we have fewer deaths than in other countries, which is not accidental, but is due to people working not only in the Reference Hospital but in all hospitals in our country."

According to Mr. Giannakis, "Mr. Sophocles' effort in carrying out all these marches, in cooperation with non-governmental organizations, especially those that are active in the issues of health of our fellow human beings and support of vulnerable groups of the population, shows that volunteering is very important . "Without these organizations and volunteering, things in Cyprus would be much worse on various issues."

He also noted that "volunteering and the role of NGOs in relation to the function they perform are interrelated because they have a direct relationship with humans, especially those who have a difficult time. The message, a few days before Christmas and New Year, is that we thank these people, we want to highlight the role of volunteerism and NGOs and wish 2021 to be a better year with hope and even more values in our human-centered society. "

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Giannakis said that he agrees with the terminology "Hospital of Humanity" given to the Reference Hospital and noted that "the fact that these people forget the individual and their families and give priority to the patient, in itself says many. The way they work without thinking about the hours also highlights a very important value and the statistics are not random for the coronavirus in Cyprus, since it is mainly due to the medical and nursing staff ".
