The Pentagon on Monday identified the five special operations pilots who were killed in a training flight crash in the eastern Mediterranean on Friday night.
The soldiers, all serving with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, were Master Sergeant 3 Stephen R. Dwyer, 38, of Clarksville, Tennessee, Master Sergeant 2 Shane M. Barnes, 34, of Sacramento, California, Staff Sgt. Tanner W. Grone, 26, of Gorham, New Hampshire, Sergeant Andrew P. Southard, 27, of Apache Junction, Arizona, and Sergeant Cade M. Wolfe, 24, of Mankato, Minnesota.
Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, commander of the US Army's Special Operations Command, also said in a statement Monday that the loss of the five soldiers is "devastating news that resonates throughout the Special Operations community."
Friday's accident occurred during a routine aerial refueling mission, according to the US European Command. The accident is currently under investigation.
