Pyrillis: "Larnaca Hospital refuses to treat patients of Famagusta"

The residents of the province of Famagusta have reached the point of asking for treatment, since the General Hospital of Famagusta operates only for patients with coronary heart disease, says the Mayor of Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrillis. He referred to cases in which the Larnaca hospital refused to treat patients in the province of Famagusta, as, according to him, "they keep the available beds of the hospital for the patients of Larnaca".

The director of OKYPY Larnaca - Famagusta, George Karotsakis, characterizes the accusations as non-existent, emphasizing that there is no question of discrimination.

In his statements to KYPE, Mr. Pyrillis stated that the residents of the province of Famagusta should not be sacrificed and become second-class patients without a hospital.

"Today the residents of Famagusta province have nowhere to be treated," he said, explaining that "patients in the province in case of treatment should go to Larnaca hospital and because we are considered foreigners, permission should be given to treat the patient there." .

"When a patient is sent from Famagusta hospital, permission must be given as to whether or not this incident can be treated," he added.

"There are cases where they refuse to treat patients in our province because, according to him, they keep the available beds of the hospital for the patients of Larnaca," said Mr. Pyrillis.

He suggests that the operation of the Famagusta hospital be re-examined, saying that "if due to the increased cases other wards positive for coronary artery disease are opened, we should reconsider the operation of the hospital. "Other hospitals will have to take over these patients, in order to reopen clinics at the Famagusta hospital to serve the patients of our province".

Mr. Pyrillis stated that in the last eight months the province of Famagusta has "loaded", according to his expression, the burden of the disease on behalf of the whole of Cyprus. "Nurses in our province who work tirelessly work in excess of themselves, while nurses from other provinces who are appointed to the reference hospital refuse to work here," he said.

Referring to the commitments of OKYPY for the completion of the two floors of the General Hospital of Famagusta, he said that "we must ask OKYPY to tell us where the works of the second and third floors of the new wings of the hospital are because things seem to be going very slowly".

According to him, the procedures must be accelerated. "By mid-January, as were the commitments of OKYPY, these two floors should be operational," he said.

"If this happens, we will solve our problems. At the moment, there are people who are afraid to visit the Famagusta hospital because it operates as a reference hospital ", he added.

He concluded by saying that the nurses and doctors of the reference hospital are heroes who risk their lives and are deprived of their families.

The director of OKYPY Larnaca - Famagusta, George Karotsakis, characterizes the accusations as non-existent, emphasizing that there is no question of distinguishing provinces, but it is a matter of planning and operation of the Larnaca hospital.

As he stated in KYPE, the Larnaca hospital is not able to fully serve all the needs of Larnaca and Famagusta. "The Larnaca General Hospital can not meet the workload and the increased volume created by the closure of the Famagusta hospital, but it is evaluated per case and not based on the origin," he said.

Regarding the reports of the Mayor of Paralimni about not providing beds to the patients of the province, he stated that there are beds maintained by the hospital, but not to make them available in Larnaca. These beds, he explained, are reserved for emergencies that the hospital can deal with.

"I accept and understand the reactions of the Mayor of Paralimni," he said, emphasizing that in the Famagusta hospital the outpatient clinics, the dialysis, the personal and the specialist doctors are still operating. Larnaca, according to Mr. Karotsakis, makes a great effort to help Famagusta and supports the reference hospital with staff, nurses and doctors.

There are, he continued, "technical difficulties sometimes in transporting patients from one hospital to another and difficulty in scheduling surgeries." In many cases, in fact, as he explained, some incidents are transferred to Nicosia.

He called on the private sector to take an active role in the pandemic and join OKYPY. "The private sector of the two areas can not serve to a large extent because they are reduced and specifically the centers that can take over," he said. According to him, it would be good for private doctors to play an active role in the coronavirus pandemic by relieving private hospitals.

He assured that in no case was human life endangered and efforts are being made, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, to strengthen the two hospitals, Famagusta and Larnaca, so that they can cope and provide appropriate medical services to all patients. .
