Concerns surrounding the issue of the schools of Rizokarpasos were expressed during the session of the Parliamentary Committee for Refugees, whose members requested that the issue be discussed at a political level in the following session in the presence of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Athena Michaelidou, as well as Head of the Anna Aristotelous Office of Humanitarian Issues of Missing and Imprisoned Persons.
During today's session, concerns were raised in relation to the teaching process and the learning outcomes of the students, due to the ban on entry to the inspectors of the Ministry of Education.
Also, issues related to the banning of some courses, but also the control of books, as well as issues of static adequacy of the buildings, were raised.
In his statements, the President of the Refugee Committee, Nikos Kettiros, said that efforts are being made to manage the situation.
Mr. Kettiros said that "the occupying authorities forbid the school tax office and the inspectors of the Ministry of Education to visit the schools of Rizokarpasos, the high school and the elementary school", to add that "there are several reasons for this, very subtle and serious, reported to the Commission".
"We are trying to manage this situation within a framework that will not create problems for those trapped," said Mr. Kettiros.
He noted that they requested at a political level at the next session that the Minister of Education and the Head of Humanitarian Affairs for Missing and Imprisoned Persons come to the Committee, so that they can look at these issues, because it concerns political issues that also have to do with the management of the Cyprus issue.
In relation to the building situation of the schools, Mr. Kettiros said that "there are no serious issues", noting that there is an issue regarding the insulation that needs to be done.
He also mentioned that the occupying authorities do not allow the school inspectors to enter the school and they do not allow the inspectors to enter the schools, while he added that there is also the issue of banning some courses and checking the books.
In addition, Mr. Kettiros stated that no books have yet arrived at the school in Kormakitis, while he added that the occupying authorities have not approved new books related to Physics or Biology at the High School of Karpasia.
"They go through them word for word. We know what they are trying to do in this way, but, as I have told you, we are also trying discreetly in a way that will not cause problems neither in the operation of the school, nor for the trapped people and especially for the students to manage this situation as to how these problems will be overcome," he said.
DISY Member of Parliament, Rita Superman, expressed her party's concern about the situation, which she said had been created in the schools of Rizokarpasos since May 2023.
As he said, since then members of the school tax office and inspectors of the Ministry of Education have not been allowed to enter, to add that this fact contributes to students' learning problems.
