Rizocarpaso: The two elderly people who were burned alive in their home and buried "temporarily" by the Turks

In 1990, shortly after Christmas, the couple DD and FF, who were trapped in the occupied Rizokarpaso, took steps to move to the free areas as their lives had become unbearable 16 years after the Turkish invasion.

An attempted robbery was the last straw for the two elderly people, despite the fact that they had endured 16 years of oppression by the Turkish settlers who had settled in their village. They wanted to return to their own people, but they never succeeded.

The tragic death and the Turkish neighbor

On the night of March 29, 1990, an unusual glow "took" the residents of Rizokarpaso from their homes, who saw a horrible spectacle.

The house of the two elderly people was engulfed in flames and they themselves were burned alive and helpless, while the residents were unable to help.

As the grandson of the elderly couple stated in the magazine "Enimerosi" a few months later, fellow villagers of his victims had reported that the afternoon before the fire in the house, a Turkish settler was sitting with the elderly on the balcony of their house. In fact, as the grandson had said, they had invited him in the evening to eat together.

"My grandfather intended to buy a car from a Turkish Cypriot. Knowing this, some may have wanted to rob him because they thought he had enough money at home. "Maybe they took the money that night and then set it on fire to cover up the murder and robbery."

This raised suspicions that the two elderly men had been murdered after being robbed and then burned down the house.

They were buried like animals

The elderly man's grandson later said the Denktash regime had banned them from taking pictures, which made the family think even more about the brutal murder scenario.

Meanwhile, the "authorities" simply attributed the horrific death to an accident, saying that the fire was caused by some "mistake" of the couple.

When the relatives went to visit the place where the elderly couple was buried, they witnessed the barbarity of the Turks who undertook the "burial".

They were literally thrown into a "grave" without a funeral, while an autopsy was never performed. In a Christian cemetery, the only tomb without a cross was that of two elderly people from Rizokarpaso.

The relatives did not proceed with the allegations of possible murder, as, as the grandson had said emphatically, they were afraid of retaliation from the occupying regime.

A committee of refugees had made an official complaint, that is, that the two Greek Cypriots were robbed, killed and then set on fire in their own house. The commission asked for the bodies to be exhumed to determine the cause of death, but this was never done, leaving unanswered questions about the horrific deaths of the two elderly men.
