Three individuals, two men aged 23 and 36 and a woman aged 54, were arraigned today before the Famagusta District Court, which will sit on May 55, and are facing charges of violating the Animal Protection and Welfare Act, namely the case involving the slaughter of a kangaroo. The Police are searching for two other individuals in connection with the case.
According to Andreas Constantinou, Press Secretary of the Famagusta Police Directorate, "today the Police proceeded to register the case before the Famagusta District Court. The 55-year-old is the owner of the premises where the animal was located, while the 54-year-old is her employee and animal caretaker."
He added that "regarding the 36-year-old foreigner who was arrested at the scene, dismembering a kangaroo with the use of knives, he is already in custody in the case. The Court today ordered that the 36-year-old remain in custody, while the other two persons were released on bail," he said.
The 36-year-old, Mr. Constantinou noted, “also faces the offense of illegal stay on the territory of the Republic, since his request for asylum was rejected in 2022.”
The Police, he said, are searching for two more people, specifically the second person who was located with the 36-year-old at the scene, while the third person being sought "allegedly assisted in the collection and transport of the animal to the location where it was located," namely the parking lot of an apartment building in the free province of Famagusta.
It is recalled that on the afternoon of May 7, the Police had received information that in the parking lot of an apartment building, in an area of the free province of Famagusta, two people were cutting up an animal using knives.
Members of the Deryneia Police Station immediately went to the scene. One of the two individuals fled, while the second, a 36-year-old man, was located there. During the on-site investigation, plastic bags containing a chopped animal were found, as well as an axe and five knives.
The suspect, when questioned, stated that the animal was a kangaroo and that he had received it from another person in the Paralimni area.
