Graduation of the Most Reverend Archimandrite George Ioannou, vicar and spiritual father of the Sotiras Municipal District - Municipality of Agia Napa.
The Municipality of Ayia Napa and the Municipal District of Sotiras announce with deep sadness the passing away of the Most Reverend Archimandrite George Ioannou, vicar and spiritual father of Sotiras, who passed away in the morning hours today, Monday, November 25, 2024, at the age of 92.
It is noted that the blessed Father George completed 17 years of priestly ministry on October 2024, 70.
The funeral service will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, November 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the Holy Church of the Resurrection of Sotiros in the Municipal District of Sotiras - Municipality of Agia Napa. The shrine of Father Georgios will be placed in public pilgrimage on Tuesday, 26/11/24 from 7 am until the time of the funeral service. A procession will follow from the Church of the Resurrection of the Savior to the new Sotiras cemetery, next to the church of Panagia Hortakiotissa.
At his request, instead of wreaths, contributions will be made for the construction of the church of Agia Marina and for charitable purposes.
As a sign of mourning, the Municipality of Ayia Napa decided the following:
1. The declaration of three days of mourning, which begins today, November 25, and the planned lighting of the Sotiras Municipal Apartment, which was to take place on Sunday, December 1, is postponed and will take place at a later stage.
2. The flags of the central offices of the Municipality of Ayia Napa in the Municipal District of Ayia Napa and the Municipal District of Sotiras will fly at half-mast during the three-day mourning period.
3. The funeral of the Most Reverend Archimandrite George Ioannou will be paid for by the Municipality of Agia Napa.
The Mayor Mr. Christos Zannettou, on behalf of the Deputy Mayors and Members of the Municipal Councils of Sotiras, Liopetriou, Agia Napa, Avgoros and Achnas, expresses his deep sorrow and his sincere condolences to the family and relatives of the blessed Archimandrite.
Today he added "we lost a bright and very beloved priest from the flock who left an indelible mark on the Church events of Sotiras and the entire Famagusta District, a fiery fighter with great action and contribution in the Liberation Struggle 1955-1959 for the liberation of the homeland us from the English Libra.
