Father George
Father Georgios Ioannou was born in Sotira in 1932 in a farming family. At the age of 20, he began his studies at the priestly school and in September 1955 he was ordained a priest with his first service in the church of Ai Stathis.
Fr. George was ordained a Deacon on October 17, 1954 by the Bishop of Salamis, Mr. Gennadios, and a Presbyter on September 18, 1955 by the blessed Archbishop of Cyprus Makarios III on the day of the inauguration of the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour.
He takes the EOKA oath and serves the struggle with zeal, dedication and self-sacrifice. After treason (October 1956) he is arrested and taken for questioning and then to the detention center of Pyla. Now his new ID is prisoner number 715.
In 1966 he received the Order of the Spiritual from the Bishop of Trimithous, George, the later Metropolitan of Nicaea. In 1982 he received the rank of Economist from the Blessed Archbishop of Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomos I. In the year 2003, he receives the rank of First Elder from the then Metropolitan of Trimython, the current Metropolitan of Constantia, Mr. Vassilios.
In 2019, the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta, Dr. Vassilios, ordained him an Archimandrite.
The office of Archimandrite is an honorary office given by the Bishop of a province to unmarried or widowed clergy, as is the case of Fr. Georgiou. He completed 70 years of ministry and fruitful offering.
