The District Court of Famagusta issued today an eight-day detention order against a 20-year-old man to facilitate the Police's investigations regarding an investigated case of attempted murder and other serious crimes against a woman allegedly committed on Saturday, August 31, in the province of Famagusta.

A statement from the Police Communication Department states that "on August 31, a 23-year-old woman reported to the Famagusta Police Station that, while she was in the hotel room where she lives in the Famagusta district, she was attacked by a man she had met shortly before.

According to the 23-year-old's complaint, the man beat her and tried to strangle her, causing her to lose consciousness."

It is added that "when the 23-year-old regained consciousness, she called for help. Bystanders spotted her and, after an ambulance was called, she was taken to Famagusta General Hospital where she was given first aid."

During the investigation of the case, "testimony emerged against the 20-year-old against whom a judicial arrest warrant was issued and he was wanted. In the context of the cooperation between the Cyprus Police and the Police of the British Bases and following information from the TAE Famagusta, the 20-year-old was located on Sunday, September 1, inside the British Bases and arrested."

The young man, who is a British citizen, was brought before the Court of British Bases yesterday, Monday, September 2, where the appropriate judicial procedure was followed to hand him over to the Authorities of the Republic of Cyprus.

Members of the TAE Famagusta went to the British Bases in Akrotiri where they received and arrested the 20-year-old, based on a court order that had been issued against him.

Today the young man was brought before the District Court of Famagusta which issued a detention order against him for eight days.
