The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, attended together with the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Achna, Municipality of Ayia Napa, Mr. Nikos Vasilas, at the "Freedom 2025" celebrations for the 112th anniversary of the liberation of Ioannina.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, was recently in the twin city of Ioannina, where, together with the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Achna, Municipality of Ayia Napa, Mr. Nikos Vasilas, they attended the "Freedom 2025" celebrations for the 112th anniversary of the liberation of the city.
On the first day of their stay, on Thursday, February 20, they attended the prayer service held at the Monument of Bizanomachi where Mayor Mr. Christos Zannetou laid a wreath, while on the evening of the same day they attended the opening of the exhibition "Greece through the front pages of the European Press", held at the Municipal Gallery of Ioannina by the President of the Hellenic Republic Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, as well as the festive event of the Municipality - with the symphony orchestra and the mixed choir Cantus -, which took place a few hours later at the Zosimaia Pedagogical Academy.
On the second and last day of the official celebrations, the Mayor Mr. Christos Zannetou and the Deputy Mayor of the Achna District of the Municipality of Ayia Napa Mr. Nikos Vasilas attended the Doxology held at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Ioannina and the student and military parade.
They also attended the unveiling of the twinning inscription of the Municipality of Ioannina, which was unveiled at the City Hall and which constitutes a timeless symbol of the ties that the city of Ioannina has developed with cities abroad, including Ayia Napa.
On his personal Facebook account, Mayor Christos Zannetou stated that "the liberation of Ioannina from the Ottoman yoke and its reintegration into free Greece on February 21, 1913 is an important milestone in our history, full of sacrifices and heroism."
The fight for the liberation of Ioannina was the most important military confrontation between Greece and the Ottoman Empire on the Epirus front during the First Balkan War.
"The relationship of our Municipality with the twinned city of Ioannina, since 1997, is a pillar of highlighting the history and the struggle for the liberation and reunification of the homeland. With respect to the heroes of yesterday, let us continue to honor their legacy and strengthen the spirit of unity and freedom."
