A 35-year-old defendant, who presented himself as an "investor" who wanted to become president of the Paralimni Youth Union football team and defrauded a former football player, a female lawyer from Limassol, as well as four other people, ended up in prison with the longest sentence of 5 years, according to a report in the newspaper "Phileleftheros".
According to "Phileleftheros", the Criminal Court imposed concurrent prison sentences of 21 months on the charges of forgery and circulation of a false document, 3 years on the charge of obtaining property by false representation and 5 years on the charge of money laundering.
As noted in the decision, the scope of the 35-year-old's criminal activity extends from September 2023 to February 2025, with the total amount he extracted reaching €173.075 from six individuals.
It is recalled that the 35-year-old defendant, in order to convince his victims to give him money, claimed that he had shares in his uncle's company in Africa and that he would receive an inheritance of 16,5 million euros, telling them that part of the money would be invested in the National Investment Fund.
According to the Criminal Court press release, the defendant was found guilty following his admission of four counts of forgery, corresponding counts of circulating a forged document, one count of obtaining goods by false representation and one count of money laundering.
