On September 2, the day that marks three years since the death of the leading music composer Mikis Theodorakis, the Little Rebetes honored his memory with a simple but particularly moving ceremony.
On the occasion of their presence in Chania, where they will perform a musical performance tonight, the choir members visited the cemetery in the village of Galatas, Chania, where the great composer rests. There, they laid a wreath at his grave and, accompanied only by a baglama, sang his composition to lyrics by Leonidas Malenis, the emblematic "Golden Green Leaf", dedicated to Cyprus.
The work of Mikis Theodorakis is an integral part of modern Greek history, as through his melodies he accompanied the struggles, hopes and visions of an entire people. His music knew no borders, while remaining a timeless source of inspiration for artists and new generations.
The Little Rebetes, through their many years of presence, have managed to breathe new life into rebetiko singing, highlighting the value of tradition and conveying the message that our cultural heritage can become a bridge between the past and the present. With their action, they not only keep alive an entire era of Greek song, but also create examples of how youth can contribute to the preservation and dissemination of our musical identity.
Their presence today at Theodorakis' grave, as well as their performance tonight in Chania, prove in practice that the vision and work of the great composer remain alive, through the voices and souls of young people.
