Police investigations continue into the case of the kangaroo, which was found in a parking lot of an apartment building, in an area of Famagusta, dismembered, using knives, by two people, while answers are awaited from the autopsy on the animal's parts, which will be performed on Monday.
As Andreas Constantinou, Press Secretary of the Famagusta Police Directorate, told CNA, "for this specific case, there is close cooperation between the Police and the Veterinary Services of the Republic. Yesterday, Thursday, members of the Police, accompanied by officers of the Veterinary Services, visited a specific premises in the free province of Famagusta and conducted investigations in relation to the case."
He added that "statements have been taken and there seems to be a clear indication as to the events, namely the manner in which the animal came into the possession of the man who was arrested. The owner of the premises made some allegations to the Police which are being investigated."
He also noted that "the important thing is to determine whether the kangaroo was alive or dead before it was slaughtered, and this will be done during the necropsy, which will be carried out on Monday by a Veterinary Services officer."
Responding to a relevant question, Mr. Constantinou said that "the arrested interrogator has made some allegations, which are being investigated, however, at this stage nothing can be said until the case is clarified."
To another question, he replied that "the 36-year-old foreigner remains illegally on the territory of the Republic, since his request for asylum was rejected in 2022. As for the second person who managed to escape from the scene, he is being sought by the Police and it is expected that his full details will be obtained in order to establish his residence status in Cyprus."
According to the facts of the case, on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 7, information was received by the Police that in the parking lot of an apartment building, in an area of Famagusta, two people were allegedly cutting up an animal using knives.
Members of the Deryneia Police Station immediately went to the scene, where one of the two individuals fled, while the second, a 36-year-old man, remained at the scene. During the on-site investigation, plastic bags containing a chopped animal, as well as an axe and five knives were found.
The suspect, when questioned, stated that the animal was a kangaroo and that he had received it from another person in the Paralimni area.
According to a Veterinary Services official, it is a dismembered adult kangaroo. The animal was taken by the competent services for further examinations.
The 36-year-old was arrested and yesterday was brought before the Famagusta District Court, which issued a detention order against him for eight days.
