A letter to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, requesting the creation of a university in the province of Famagusta, was sent by the President of EOA Famagusta, MPs and Mayors of the province, the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta and the provincial organizations EBE, OEB and PASYXE Famagusta.
In a statement of the Provincial Self-Government Organization (EOA) of Famagusta it is stated that "the joint letter to the President of the Republic requesting the creation of a university in the province was sent by the President of the EOA of Famagusta Yiannis Karousos, in cooperation with the Mayors of Paralimni - Deryneia and Ayia Napa, Giorgos Nicolettos and Christos Zannettos and the 11 deputies of the province. The letter is also signed by the Diocese of Constantia and Famagusta and the provincial organizations EBE, OEB and PASYXE Famagusta".
In the letter, "the need to redress the injustice" is underlined, as they characterize the fact that "the province remains the only one in Cyprus that does not host a higher educational institution on its territory. The creation of a university will provide multiple benefits, both economic and social, touristic, educational and cultural, enhancing local development and offering significant incentives for youth and entrepreneurship," the letter states.
The initiative's request for a meeting with the President of the Republic is also expressed, in order to discuss the matter. The delegation of the initiative will consist of representatives of local bodies, parliamentarians, municipal authorities, organizations and bodies of Famagusta", it states.
