The "Peace and Freedom" High School-Lyceum, Deryneia-Sotiras, carried out a five-day visit to Brussels with the participation of 17 students of the 2024rd Lyceum and the accompaniment of three teachers. The mobility of the students took place in collaboration with the GO! Atheneum school in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, within the framework of the funding of our school as an accredited Erasmus+ organization 2027-XNUMX, in School Education.
The mobility took place within the framework of the objective of "active citizenship" set during the Accreditation. The aim is to encourage students to actively participate in democratic processes, to contribute to social justice and to take initiatives to address social problems. Active citizenship encourages people to be informed, to be interested in local, European and global developments. The objectives are: The cultivation of intercultural awareness and openness. Respect for the values of other peoples and cultures, which are key pillars of the European edifice. The perception that they belong to the broader cultural heritage of Europe.
On the first day of their visit to Brussels, the students participated in an organized excursion with an English-speaking guide to Bruges and Ghent. The tour gave the students the opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of two of Belgium’s most iconic cities. In Bruges, they admired the exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture, picturesque canals and world-renowned art, gaining insight into its significant historical importance as a center of commerce and culture. In Ghent, the students explored landmarks such as the Cathedral of Saint Bavo and the Gravensteen Castle, learning about the city’s rich history and multicultural influences. By experiencing the combination of tradition and modernity in these cities, the students developed a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of preserving our shared heritage. Such experiences promote understanding, tolerance and a sense of connection between cultures.
On the 2nd day of the visit to Brussels, our school students toured the area of the buildings of the European Union institutions. In particular, they visited the Parlamentarium and the House of European History. During the tour of the Parlamentarium, the students explored the interactive exhibits that explain the history of the EU, its institutions and the adoption procedures and gained a deeper understanding of the role of the Members of the European Parliament and how European laws are created. This experience strengthened the understanding of European values, such as democracy, unity and diversity, while encouraging active citizenship and critical thinking about the current challenges facing the EU.
The tour of the House of European History helped students gain a deeper understanding of Europe’s shared past and cultural heritage. Through engaging exhibitions, they explored important historical events and their impact on modern times, strengthening their critical thinking and historical awareness. The museum’s emphasis on diversity and interconnectedness helped students appreciate the complexity of European identity. At the same time, it encouraged reflection on the lessons of history, promoting values such as peace, cooperation and tolerance.
During the third day, the students toured the city of Brussels and explored iconic landmarks such as the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Manneken Pis, the Black Tower, the House of Compassion, the Royal Galleries, the Cathedral of Saint Michael & Saint Gudula, etc. They admired the combination of historic and modern architecture. This experience enriched their understanding of European culture, history and governance, while at the same time strengthening their appreciation for diversity and the vibrant coexistence of tradition and modernity in a cosmopolitan city.
On the fourth day, the students visited the school and the area of the partner school GO! Atheneum in Geraardsbergen. As part of this activity, the students from Cyprus presented Cyprus, sharing information about Famagusta and its culture, their local area, and their school. In turn, the Belgian students presented their own country, area, and school, providing an opportunity for mutual learning. After the presentations, students from both countries collaborated in group discussions that focused on the similarities between people from different countries and how these common characteristics promote unity and understanding.
The Belgian students coordinated the group work using their school’s New Teaching Methodology, which emphasizes active participation, increased student responsibility, and innovative approaches to learning. Later, the Belgian students took our group on a tour of their town, Geraardsbergen. This tour provided insight into local history, culture, and attractions, providing an authentic glimpse into their daily lives and community. The students gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of different cultures, cultivating respect, acceptance, and empathy.
This activity not only enhances students' knowledge of monuments, but also equips them with valuable skills that can be applied in various academic and personal contexts.
Preparing presentations encouraged students to research thoroughly, analyze information, and synthesize key points about the information and monuments they presented.
More generally, creating and presenting oral speeches helps students develop public speaking skills, such as clarity, confidence, and effective storytelling. Collaborating on a common project strengthened teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Exposure to New Teaching Methodology broadened the perceptions of both teachers and students of our school about education, while interacting with peers from another country helped develop adaptability and social skills, as well as opening up new horizons.
This collaboration promises to be a valuable experience, strengthening friendships, intercultural understanding and shared learning! And of course, all these experiences and knowledge gained from the trip will be shared by the students with all the students at the school through organized activities at the school (presentations, interactive games, signs, film).
